“Enhanced Coal Exploitation through Underground Coal Gasification in European Lignite Mines” Kick-off Meeting

ISPE, as project coordinator, together with all involved partners, launched on August 28, the European research project COAL2GAS on the occasion of the kick-off meeting held in Bucharest.

The event was organized by ISPE at its headquarters and chairperson of the event was COAL2GAS Coordinator – dr. Carmencita CONSTANTIN.

The event started with the presentation of both the experts attending the event and their organisations, members of the project consortium, in order to underline the interdisciplinary approach of the project and high level of expertise. The consortium gathers RDI institutes, consulting – engineering – turnkey projects’ developers and lignite mines.

COAL2GAS consortium covers Europe from West to South and East through its partners coming from Germany, Belgium, The Nederlands, Greece, Poland, Slovenia and Romania, ensuring a geographical well balanced knowledge sharing and replicating potential.

COAL2GAS project represents a challenge for the coal power industry in Romania and a real opportunity for the Oltenia Energy Complex to develop new alternatives considering the current background at European level in terms of security of energy supply and natural resources import dependence.

ISPE member of the Romanian Energy Center

Recently, ISPE became member of the Romanian Energy Center, headquartered in Brussels and Bucharest. The Romanian Energy Center is an NGO deploying a lobby activity for promoting Romanian companies in the energy field on the European market and also investment projects submitted for obtaining European funds. This activity is meant to rise the European funds input rate and to revitalize the Romanian energy private and public sector.

The Romanian Energy Center is also involved in standardizing the legislative frame and in regulating the European one, initiating programs on prior directions and themes having technological and financial support at European level, by being an information support channel – dissemination – knowledge sharing.

Between 12th -14th November took place in Brussels the “European Coal Days – Coal in Action”, a series of events organized by the Central Europe Energy Partners (CEEP) in partnership with two European deputies (Bogdan Marcinkiewicz and Christian Ehler). The events gathered representatives from the European Parliament, European Commission, Financial and Social European Committee and also EUROCOAL, public authorities from Poland, the Romanian Energy Center and private environment representatives.

General Information and objectives of the international project

With energy production sectors based mostly on fossil fuel combustion, many Black Sea region countries are interested in applying CCS for reducing their CO2 emissions, including the development of CO2 transportation infrastructure on their territory. Although the technology related to CO2 transportation is considered to be known from similar activities (e.g. natural gas networks), there are additional specific design considerations and a number of fundamentally important risks and hazards specific for CO2 transportation that must be investigated.The international research project aims to address:

  • the thermodynamic analysis and modelling of pure CO2 and its mixtures with other impurities, such as H2S, N2, water etc, over a wide range of temperatures and pressures and the design of CO2 transportation pipelines,
  • the risk analysis of important risks related to CO2 pipeline transportation, namely landslide, seismic, corrosion, design and construction error risk. Risk assessment guidelines will be developed based on the obtained results.

The Romanian gas transmission company has expressed their willingness of applying the research results, as the risks related to CO2 transportation by pipeline is a subject of great interests for them. At the end of the project, the Romanian gas transmission company will be trained on the project topics having as main support the prepared guidelines.

The results of the project are expected to have a significant impact on the development of the principles of engineering and construction for CO2 transportation pipelines and of the technical prescriptions for their design, construction and operation.

Objectives of the national project

The objective of the national project is to research possible risks at landslides associated with CO2 long distance pipeline transportation, in order to create a risk assessment guidance based on the obtained results and finally train the pipeline operators.

Estimated results of the national project

The expected results of the project are as follows:

  • identification of potential sites of CO2 transportation pipelines located in areas with high geological risk;
  • determination of safe locations and appropriate installation techniques for pipelines crossing areas with high risk of landslides;
  • determination of the basic principles for engineering, construction and operation of high-pressure CO2 transportation pipelines crossing areas with high risk of landslides, useful in the development of technical regulations for the design, construction and operation of these pipelines.

Scientific results obtained so far

  • determination of the potential areas for CCS implementation, including potential locations of the future CO2 transportation pipelines;
  • geomorphological classification of the areas crossed by CO2 transportation pipelines;
  • identification of the areas prone to landslip;
  • field investigations and mapping on sites prone to landslides;
  • development of the geological models and establishment of the elements for slope stability calculation;
  • analysis and statistical processing of information;
  • correlation and systematization of data resulted from Field investigations and laboratory Analysis;
  • determination of the reference model;
  • performing the stability calculation for a location in the investigated area;
  • determination of causes and risk factors for slip-prone planes and slopes;
  • determination of the appropriate technologies for pipeline installation in areas with high risk of landslides.

International workshop

On the 2nd of November 2012, the Institute for Studies and Power Engineering (ISPE), together with the members of the CO2TRACCS project international consortium – National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Technical University of Sofia (TUS) and Middle East Technical University (METU), has organized the international workshop titled „CO2 Transportation Risk Assessment for Carbon Capture and Storage”, at its headquarters in Bucharest, Romania. The event was organized as part of the dissemination activities of the CO2TRACCS project funded under Black Sea ERA.NET Pilot Joint Call.

The main objective of the workshop was to disseminate preliminary results of the CO2TRACCS research project but also to share knowledge and experience gained in the field by internationally recognized companies.

“The 6th International Energy Trade Fair of Romania and Conference for PV”, an important Romanian event organized by REECO GmbH, took place on 20th – 22th November at EXPOROM Pantelimon.

ISPE winner of the “Engineering company of the year” award

ISPE was nominated “Engineering company of the year” on the occasion of the “Romanian Energy Awards 2013” Gala, organized by The Diplomat at the Athenee Palace Hilton Hotel, on the 23th April 2013.

This award honors exceptional engineering accomplishments of ISPE, demonstrating excellency in offering services to companies activating in the energy field. Mr. Ioan Dan Gheorghiu, President and CEO, ISPE and Mr. Ovidiu Apostol, Managing Director, ISPE.

Over 16 awards were offered at the “Romanian Energy Awards Gala 2013” to remarkable companies and personalities of the Romanian Energy Sector. We should point out Transelectrica awarded with the “Energy Company of the Year”, “Deal of the year” award was offered to Exxon and OMV Petrom companies, while Mr. Constantin B?l??oiu, SE I?alni?a Manager was nominated “Energy Manager of the Year”.

International Conference “Cost effective and environmental friendly cooling technologies”

ISPE @ Romenvirotec 2012

Between 28th February – 2nd March ROMEXPO organizes under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry the XIXth edition of the expositional event “ROMENVIROTEC – International Exhibition for Technology and Environment, Recycling and Alternative Energy Protection Equipment”.ISPE as ROMEXPO partner will participate to ROMENVIROTEC both as exhibitor and organizer of the Round Table “Strategic objectives and action plans for achieving the targets to reduce GHG emissions” which will take place at the Press Center on Friday, 2nd March 2012.

ISPE invests in last generation audio-video equipment

ISPE wired the two conference rooms from its headquarters with high performance audio-video systems.One of the conference rooms having a maximum capacity of 40 persons, was wired with a professional system of video projection and a discussion system. Both rooms are equipped with a last generation audio-video infrastructure permitting sound and image rendering from multiple sources.

Câmpina – a succes story of ISPE

European funds for historical polluted sites rehabilitation are now available.Preparation by ISPE and its partners of a technical and economic documentation for accessing PHARE European funds, allowed Câmpina Municipality to go ahead with greening the environment and to access
European funds under SOP Environment – Priority Axis 2 – Key Areas of Intervention 2.2 – The rehabilitation of historically polluted areas.The signing of the financing contract with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Public Finances is a great success, based on the financing application prepared by ISPE.

The total project value is 2.927.800 €, with deadline: 24 months at Câmpina City Hall, January 18, 2011.

The goal of the project is the removal of the pollution sources and the removal of the potential negative effects on the health of the neighbouring people.Assess results: to obtain a pleasant open public space: ensuring a place of leisure and recreation for children and adults.

The remediation project and the additional documentation regarding the Financing Request were developed by ISPE in consortium with The Technical University of Constructions Bucharest and Parsons Brinckerhoff Ltd. Great Britain. Congratulations to the colleagues from the Environmental Engineering Department!
