Historical Pollution Assessment of the Mangalia Shipyard
Short description:
The Mangalia Shipyard was established in 1953 since when production and services to military vessels has commenced. During the shipyard operation period the environment had been impacted by different industrial activities carried out within its property. Recently the Mangalia Shipyard in association with Lurssen Group established the Mangalia Naval Systems SRL. The new established association ordered an historical pollution assessment for its property, part of the Mangalia Shipyard land in the past.
The assessment was carried out according to ASTM E1903-97 Phase II ESA, GD 1408/2007 and contains an Action Plan to remediate the impacted areas.
The activities carried out to complete the assessment were as follow:
- review of available historical information and documents pertaining to the site;
- visual inspection of the site to determine past practices or circumstances that may present environmental concerns;
- evaluated potential pollutant sources for soil, surface/groundwater, air, surface anomalies, stressed vegetation, storage/handling of hazardous substances, presence of asbestos, PCB, lead;
- visual inspection of the properties within 500 m of the site;
- interviewed persons with significant knowledge of the site;
- elaborated the plan and supervision of the samples collection from the site for water, mussels, sediments, air and soil;
- analized and reviewed the obtained results;
- estimated impacted areas;
- prepared the investigation and environmental assessment report for the analized site.

Estimated Technical Performances: Impacted areas in the property of Mangalia Naval Systems SRL were estimated and an Action Plan for remediation was recommended.
